Vaginitis is an infection in the vagina. The vagina maintains a balance between yeast and bacteria and a number of things can disrupt this balance. Once the balance is disrupted, the stronger organism can grow out of control.
Typically the patient will have experience with treating this problem. A yeast infection is easily treated with over the counter products
The patient may complain of itching and burning. There can also be a discharge associated with the condition. If the discharge is white or “cheesy” the cause is usually yeast. If the discharge is colored, the cause is likely bacterial.
Fever or infection that is not clearing from treatment. If the problem is from a bacterial infection the patient should seek medical care as they will need antibiotics—over the counter creams will not be sufficient.
The problem is serious if the infection moves into the uterus or Fallopian tubes, and can manifest as general abdominal pain.
For yeast infections, over the counter creams like Monistat should clear it up. If the cause is bacterial, the patient will need antibiotics. Both types can benefit from a 1% povidone-iodine douche.
