In the wild, a hunter often finds themselves in situations that require medical intervention. To make sure you’re prepared for any eventuality, we’ve teamed up with RISE Armament to deliver this hunting first aid kit—the best of anything you’ll find outside the box.

Life-Threatening Injuries (Massive Bleeding and Punctured Lungs)

The tourniquet is a Combat Application Tourniquet and is in bright orange. The tourniquet should be placed where you can access it rapidly with either hand–we recommend on the shoulder strap of your pack.

The Hyfin Compact Chest Seals and TacMed OLAES bandage should be placed in an easily accessible pocket–like in the lid of your pack. You don’t need as rapid access as a tourniquet, but you don’t want to have to dig around in your pack either. An OLAES bandage can be used as a traditional pressure bandage, and it also contains wound-packing gauze right inside the absorptive pad. Having the gauze integrated into the bandage eliminates the need to carry additional compressed gauze, allowing you to save a little more weight.

Musculoskeletal Injuries (Bones and Joints)

The splinting components are a little more involved than our other first aid kits. Because hunters generally carry heavier weight and move through rough terrain, there is a greater likelihood of rolling an ankle or injuring a knee. That is why we include two full 36-inch aluminum splints, four cravats (triangular bandages), and two elastic wraps. With these items, you can quickly and safely splint any injury to an extremity. Let’s face it, the last thing you want to do when you are hurt is to try and improvise some janky splint out of sticks and 550 cord.

You can store the two splints folded in half alongside your water bladder or any long sleeve in your pack. Storing them this way keeps them out of the way.  In addition, they are not needed for any life-threatening injuries, so you can bury them deeper in your pack.

We recommend keeping the cravats and elastic bandages in one of the included poly bags. Of course, splinting is not a sterile procedure, but you probably don’t want to build a splint with materials soaked with blood from your kill or from whatever funk is growing on your socks from a week in the backcountry.

Wounds and Boo-Boos

Included are some basic tools for cleaning wounds. Soft tissue injuries are one place you can cause yourself a serious problem if you are not paying attention. Unless you are hunting in some magical woodland with showers on every other tree, you are likely not getting the chance to hygiene as often as is wise. If you get a break in your skin, all of that dirt and grime can lead to an infection. Some infections become serious enough to go system-wide, which can be deadly. The way to prevent this from happening is by immediately (or as soon as possible) cleaning the wound and protecting it from further contamination.

We include an irrigation syringe for flushing the wound (all you really need is clean water) and tweezers for picking out debris. We also include some antiseptic wipes to help clean the surrounding area. Finally, you can protect the injury from getting contaminated with any of the assorted bandages and gauze–we’ve added enough for a few hunts.
