Wound Management (HB)

(In the management of all wounds, bleeding must be controlled using well-aimed direct pressure with whatever means are necessary. Control of severe bleeding is a higher priority than wound cleaning.)

Open Wounds, Shallow Wounds (Abrasions and Burns)

  1. Wash surrounding skin
  2. Remove foreign particulate materials.
  3. Irrigate wound with clean water.
  4. Cover the wound with a dressing and bandage and immobilize the wound area if possible. Do not close with sutures or adhesive closures (butterflies).

Impaled Objects

  1. Remove all impaled objects unless doing so would cause further harm.
  2. Exceptions include:
    • impaled objects in the globe of the eye
    • when removal would result in severe pain or bleeding
    • when there is significant resistance to removal
  3. Remove objects that interfere with safe transport or will cause more damage if left in place.
  4. Treat as an open wound.
