It is impossible to tell in the field exactly what is causing a general sickness without some kind of lab test. The cause could be bacterial or viral.
Patients could be symptomatic at any point, but the highest likelihood is when they have an active fever.
Symptoms can be anything associated with “not feeling well”. These symptoms could include a general sense of malaise, coughing with (or without) productive sputum, fever, running nose, sneezing, etc.
Patients could be nauseous and could have diarrhea.
All patients with an illness that involves a fever should be evacuated. Any patient that does not appear to be getting better (or is actively getting worse) should be evacuated.
Your job as a provider is mainly to provide support. You should keep the patient well hydrated and feed them if they can tolerate food. You should also protect them from the environment and keep them warm.
Patients should be kept isolated from other well people, and precautions should be taken such as wearing a mask and frequent hand washing.
